The 19-year-old Albury man was recently announced as apprentice of the year in the River-ina division of the 2014 NSW Training Awards.
Mr Hunter, who works at Restaurant 579 on Olive, said it was a great way to cap off the end of his three years studying Certificate III in Commercial Cookery at Albury TAFE.
“I just finished last week, so it means all that hard work has paid off,” he said.
It’s another feather in his cap after being awarded the Albury apprentice chef development scholarship last year.
Mr Hunter’s passion for cooking comes down to his love of experimenting.
“I like to do things that people wouldn’t necessarily do,” he said.
“I once made ice cream infused with hay that I bought at a pet shop.”
Mr Hunter will represent the Riverina at the state NSW Training Awards, as will another Albury resident, Victoria Cooper, a winner in the trainee of the year category.
Ms Cooper recently completed a two-year traineeship as a museum collections officer with Albury Council.
Winners in the state awards will be announced in September.
