Martin Buckland, 33, from Yarra Junction, and Daniel Kerr, 32, from Hawthorn, had failed to return home on Saturday after a snowboarding trip, sparking a wide search for them after hikers found their campsite deserted.
While police were initially hopeful the pair might be found alive, those hopes came to an end when they found Mr Kerr’s body yesterday morning at the site of an avalanche.
Police are asking snow-goers to focus on pre-planning and assessing the weather ahead of similar ventures into the remote high country.
This search was the third time in a week police had been called to search the area and they have warned recent heavy snowfalls had created the potential for avalanches.
Conditions ahead of the weekend were poor with sub-zero temperatures, rain and low to moderate visibility.
While it would be unfortunate to ban adventurers from visiting the region in certain conditions, the reality is the weather can quickly turn dangerous and result in the worst possible outcome.
