Yesterday, the Red Cross honoured Mrs Feuerherdt’s 70 years of service and in return received a reassurance from the 91-year-old that she intended to keep going as long as she can.
Mrs Feuerherdt’s level of activity may have declined but she still attends meetings and even bakes cakes for the Walla branch.
She joined the Red Cross in 1944 at a very different time.
The branch had been operating only five years and the world was at war.
Volunteers with the Red Cross supported their servicemen, organising parcels for soldiers, knitting warm clothes and sewing pyjamas.
Today the work is different and is more likely to include catering for functions and running markets and raffles to raise money.
Mrs Feuerherdt has been the president of the Walla branch in two different stints, giving her an appreciation of the task facing today’s committee.
Well done to Mrs Feuerherdt and congratulations on an amazing milestone that puts her among an elite of those who serve their communities.
