William died “serving his Queen and Country” in Pretoria, South Africa on December 27, 1900, when he was aged 23.
He was the son of Greta resident James Bates Petty, who died on October 18, 1918.
After William’s death a handsome monument of the broken column type was erected by public subscription.
It is situated just inside the main gates of the cemetery.
The monument still stands but the trust would like to contact any relatives who might like to be considered in its restoration.
Much publicity is being given to next year’s Anzac centenary celebrations and the Greta cemetery trust would like this monument to be a fitting tribute to a soldier who died for his country just a few days before this nation’s states became a federation nation.
If you can assist with information regarding this matter, please contact the trust chairman John Tanner on (03) 5766 6280 or the secretary Christine Magee on (03) 5727 6264 or 0427 276 264.
Or you can write to 1634 Glenrowan-Moyhu Road, Greta, Vic, 3675.
