Knobel, pictured above, and the Pies are understood to have agreed to terms for next season, with the move to be made official shortly.
“There’s no news yet but it shouldn’t be too far away,” Knobel said.
“We’ve got a few things in place.”
Knobel has coached the Pies for the past two seasons and moved to Wangaratta six weeks ago.
The Pies mathematically remain in the hunt to play finals this year, despite dropping Saturday’s clash with North Albury at Bunton Park.
However, Wangaratta faces ladder leader Lavington on Saturday.
The Pies had hoped to regain VFL duo Josh Porter and Lee Dale this week but it is looking unlikely at this stage.
Porter has been playing seniors on a regular basis at Werribee, with Dale spending all season in the Tigers’ development side.
“At this stage, I’d say Josh is fairly doubtful but Lee is more of a chance,” Knobel said.
