The event will coincide with the Australian government’s national day of mourning.
A multi-denominational memorial will start at 10.30am at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne.
Albury’s event will start at 1pm and involve representatives of the Anglican, Catholic and Uniting churches.
St Matthew’s Father Peter Macleod-Miller said 298 lives were lost when the flight between Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur was shot down on July 17.
“We grieve for all but particularly the 38 men, women and children who called Australia home,” he said.
“We reflect not just on this loss, but the act of violence and every war and dispute where innocent people are caught up in disagreements.”
Residents are being asked to bring along wattle and sunflowers, which is the theme as a result of the plane crashing in a sunflower field.
Reverend Christine Moimoi, of St David’s Uniting Church, said schools had been invited to attend.
The service will start with a hymn and will be followed by a condolence message from Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
Wreaths will be laid, followed by a one-minute silence and the national anthem.
