Mayor Rodney Wangman said a report would be prepared for this month’s council meeting which would outline the city’s response to the end of the carbon tax.
Albury Council moved to reduce its tip fees by up to 25 per cent last Friday.
A single-axle trailer of waste would cost $35 but it has fallen to $26 with a tandem trailer now $14 cheaper at $41.
These prices are half the amount charged by Wodonga, where residents pay $60 for a ute-load or single axle trailer of waste, $95 for a tandem-axle trailer and $43 per cubic metre of waste in an oversized trailer.
There has always been a price difference between the two sites due to the transfer costs involved in moving waste from Wodonga to Albury.
Cr Wangman said this was partly the reason Wodonga had to wait to make changes to their waste disposal rates.
“The decision as to what Albury City would do in reducing their charges was made last week and advised to our council near the end of that week,” Cr Wangman said.
“As the charges we pay in Wodonga are mostly related to the transfer of waste to their facility, council staff are preparing a recommendation to our councillors to adopt.”
Cr Wangman indicated the council had already began discussions on the matter and said a number of issues surrounding rates will be fleshed out at the next meeting.
“I can advise that councillors discussed this matter at our normal Monday briefing session this week, asking that (business services director) Trevor Ierino investigate and include in his report a number of questions we had with respect to the transfer station entry fees, transfer station charges that apply from Albury City, the Cleanaway contract and our rates notices,” Cr Wangman said.
It is unclear what the rates will be and when they will start from.
“I can’t say what the reductions will be but we anticipate that there will be reductions, that we will find out on August 18,” Cr Wangman said.
