Arson attack at Beechworth Police Station

A BEECHWORTH police officer's private car was destroyed in a deliberately lit blaze last night.

Emergency services were called to the unattended police station in Williams Street around 2.30am after a passerby noticed the fire and called Triple 0.

Police believe unknown offenders have entered the rear yard of the police station around 2.15am and set fire to the vehicle which was parked at the rear of the police station.

The resulting car fire has spread into the roof cavity of the station igniting the insulation.

The vehicle was completely destroyed and the police station sustained minor damage.

The station was unmanned at the time of the incident.

Investigators are treating the fire as suspicious and an arson chemist will be on scene this morning.

Detectives from Wodonga Crime Investigation Unit are appealing for public assistance.
