The council this week ticked off a development application lodged by Table Top Holdings, which includes the construction of a 54-unit rotary dairy with an output of between 300 to 400 cows an hour.
The dairy herd will include up to 700 Jersey and Jersey cross cows and the dairy will utilise 275 hectares of the “Wyseworth” property on the northern side of the Riverina Highway, three kilometres east of Howlong.
Table Top Holdings director Warwick Ashby made a presentation to the council and flagged that another dairy would be built nearby, subject to the council’s approval.
The approved site is flat and clear of vegetation and had most recently been used for cropping activities with some areas irrigated.
It is located about 400 metres north-west of the “Wyseworth” homestead which has heritage recognition in the Corowa Local Environmental Plan 2012.
The dairy will be about 370 metres from the major access point, the Riverina Highway.
Tankers will be entering the site every day with milk to be delivered to the Murray Goulburn co-operative.
The development application said the number of vehicles accessing the site would decline as the traffic generated by farming activities wound down.
“Consequently the frequency of truck movements to and from the property will not have a detrimental impact on the safety or function of the highway,” the report said.
“Sight lines in both directions along the highway are satisfactory and the statement of environmental effects claims the milk receiver, Murray Goulburn, has inspected and endorsed the access.
“At certain times visibility east and west along the highway may be compromised by the sun.”
The dairy would be washed down after each milking with waste directed into anaerobic ponds for treatment and later used for irrigation purposes.
All untreated wastewater would be contained on the site and treated water would not be irrigated within 100 metres of the property boundary.
