Finley blew a chance to go straight into the grand final with a 33-point loss to the Damian Cupido-coached Rumba at Congupna at the weekend.
The Cats will now fight for their season in the preliminary final.
But Sexton said the club remained upbeat about their chances.
“Of course, but we’ve got to earn another go,” Sexton said yesterday,” he said.
“We had a bit of an honest chat after the game and I think we played at about 45 per cent, which was disappointing.
“But as much as it’s disappointing, it’s also a positive because we didn’t have any player stand out and we can improve a lot.
“Jordy Daniel was our only player to get more than 20 possessions and I’m usually after three or four pushing 30.
“So we can definitely get better.”
Former AFL players Brad Dick, Jarrod Atkinson, Nathan Lovett-Murray and Damian Cupido all caused the Cats headaches.
Dick and Atkinson kicked four goals each, with all of Lovett-Murray’s possessions of the highest quality.
Nathan Terlich was also good.
“Their second quarter was magnificent,” Sexton said.
“Our first quarter was really good and things were pretty even but they smashed us in the midfield in the second.
“I was pretty happy with our third quarter but our last was mediocre.”
Sexton said the Cats had simply lost to a better side on the day.
The minor premier moved straight into the grand final with Saturday’s win.
“At the end of the day, they deserve to be in the granny,” Sexton said.
“They’re the best side right now.”
Meanwhile, Echuca United ended Barooga’s season when it defeated the Hawks by 24 points yesterday.
