The speed will be reduced within stretches of the road, including near the school crossings at the Brockley Street and Pearce Street roundabouts.
Signs will be installed this week ahead of students heading back to school on Monday.
The speed limit reduction is aimed at protecting students from the nearby Wodonga South Primary School, Wodonga Primary School and Wodonga Middle Years College.
While previously the 40km/h school speed zones were implemented only directly outside the schools, changes to the law now provide for the limits to be introduced on nearby streets and roads.
Mr Tilley says that will benefit the many children who are encouraged to walk or ride to school to get exercise, and ensure they remain safe while doing so.
However, motorists should be ready to ensure they adhere to the new restrictions and reduce their speed in the designated sections of Beechworth Road from next week, when they come into effect.
