Cr Jackson is intending to move a motion at the Albury council meeting on Monday night that officially pledges its support to Marriage Equality Australia’s cause.
While the motion would not have any legal impact, Cr Jackson said it would make clear how Albury felt on the issue.
“When you start getting the numbers behind that it can have a flow-on effect,” he told The Border Mail.
“We have the support in the community and I think it’s a discussion happening in Albury at the moment that really needs to be had.
“The community wants to see some action on it.”
Cr Jackson said he had had several discussions with Marriage Equality Australia, and he hoped that, if successful, other local councils would follow suit.
He said he had not yet lobbied his fellow councillors on the issue.
