And we can expect to see much more of the same on the issue.
The motion bound the council to write to the member for Farrer, Sussan Ley, urging her back the cause of marriage equality.
Ms Ley has said she will wait for legislation to come before the federal Parliament before she would spell out her views.
That could be as soon as today if Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjelm has his way and introduces a same-sex marriage bill.
Those who supported the Albury Council vote are now considering an approach to the Wodonga Council, urging its support for a similar statement.
Marriage equality advocate Toni Johnson has said she knows up to 30 same-sex Albury couples who would marry if they were legally entitled to do so.
No doubt those couples are watching this debate closely, hoping it builds awareness about their circumstances.
While a clear majority are now said to back reform, it may still be some time before the issue is decided, despite Senator Leyonhjelm’s efforts.
