The 17-year-old is one of a handful of amateurs in a field that includes world no. 1 Rory McIlroy and Australia's best Adam Scott.
Murray earned the right to play at The Australian after being the youngest winner of the VIC Amateur late last year.
The Wodonga Catholic College student will tee off at 8.15am on the tenth hole.
Earlier, Corowa's Marcus Fraser started his round with a bogey and a birdie to be square with the card after two holes.
Full wrap in tomorrow's Border Mail.
Zach Murray sits at 1-over the card after six holes at his first Australian Open.
The Wodonga champion had opportunities for a birdie on the 11th and 16th holes but rolled past the cup after a bogie at par-4 on the 13th.
A large group of Border supporters - about 15 to 20 people - wearing matching t-shirts are cheering Murray along.
His ability to get up and down from around the greens has been a tee to his play in the wet and windy conditions.
There are four players currently sitting in top place at 3-under the card in tough scoring conditions.
