Moving the meeting from Sunday to Friday and successfully campaigning for the creation of a local public holiday has been a bold move by the club.
It is aimed a creating an event with the potential to build patronage in the future, in a similar fashion to that which has seen Albury’s annual gold cup grow markedly in recent decades.
There is no doubt the Wodonga club has worked tirelessly over the past 12 months preparing for today’s event and the weather is set to smile upon the track.
The question is whether the patrons will come through the gate and there has been varied opinion as to whether or not the public holiday to allow more to attend the race meeting is a good idea.
However, many individuals and businesses in Wodonga have always seen the gold cup meeting as the opportunity for a pre-Christmas get-together and they should translate that support to today.
Even if the crowd is modest, this is the first step on a longer journey and it will take time and patience to build the cup as a landmark event for the city.
