Pedestrians can now walk directly between Kenilworth St and the railway station using a new steel span and the old railway footbridge that has been a landmark for decades.
But it means a longer and less direct route between Dean St and East Albury pending the building of a cable-stay footbridge opposite Dean St.
The 44m Kenilworth St steel bridge, weighing 27 tonnes, spans the four lanes of the future freeway, while the old section crosses seven rail tracks, four of these rusting and redundant.
Structural engineers Samaras Group made the bridge in Adelaide for freeway builder Abigroup, delivering it to the site in July.
Construction of the cable-stay bridge will not be finished for several months.
This will include steps and ramps for wheelchairs and prams.
