Yep, it’s that time again — the Boxing Day sales are kicking off across the country today and, according to Myer Albury at least, some of the best bargains to be had are right here on the Border.
And, while some of us will prefer to sleep in and snooze off Christmas dinner, there are others who will have woken at dawn battle-ready to brave the teeming hordes of shoppers when Myer’s doors first opened at 7am.
Or not — store manager Paul Guilmartin certainly wasn’t expecting the type of early-morning queues often seen in the metropolitan cities.
“I’d say we’ll be well-paced through the morning but by 9am, we’ll be manic,” he said.
“The launch day offers we’ve got are probably the strongest we’ve seen in the whole country, there’s hundreds of dollars of savings in some regards.”
Border stores hosting sales today will contribute to a predicted nationwide splurge of more than $2 billion on Boxing Day alone, and more than $16 billion over the next three weeks.
Australian shoppers aged 14 or older will spend an average of $850 each between Boxing Day and January 15.
As well as the advertised offers, Mr Guilmartin said the store would have a range of special, hour-long offers at selected times throughout the day.
These include a massive 50 per cent off a Samsung 40 inch television later in the day, and 40 per cent off original price bags and wallets at one stage in the morning.
Mr Guilmartin said the store expected at least 10,000 transactions on the day, with the store open until 7pm.
The annual sales come after what Mr Guilmartin described as a “very healthy” Christmas.
“There’s a definite enthusiasm for retail,” he said.
“In the last few weeks before Christmas, when you expect that panic to set in, shoppers are saying ‘No, we’re OK, we’re just finishing’.”
He said the store had been prepared for that change, having been set up for Christmas since September.
