Payne is accused of using a kitchen knife to stab another man, 19, several times in the chest and of smashing two bottles over the head of another man, 30.
The allegations relate to a brawl that broke on on Jacaranda Street yesterday at 12.45am.
Earlier: ALBURY and Wodonga police joined forces to defuse a wild brawl in West Albury in which a man was stabbed early yesterday.
The fight that landed two men in Albury Hospital broke out on Jacaranda Street at 12.45am.
A man, 19, was stabbed many times in the chest and another, 30, apparently hit over the head with two bottles.
Albury police Inspector Tony Moodie said more than 10 people had been involved.
A witness said the violence erupted after a bottle was thrown through the bedroom window of a Jacaranda Street house.
“I was just about to doze off to sleep when I heard something smash. I got up and ran to my grandmother’s room, turned the light on and saw glass scattered over her,” the witness said.
“I kind of dragged her out of bed because I was scared they would throw more bottles through the window.
“I ran out the front door to see what was going on and there was a big group of people on the road yelling and throwing bottles.”
Wodonga police were called to help break up the brawl.
Sgt Mick Bourke said a uniformed crew had answered a rare request for assistance from Albury.
“When they got there, there were already plain clothes people there,” he said.
Sgt Bourke said there was a lot of unruly, drunken people at the scene.
“Our officers were basically moving people on,” he said.
Police spent much of the morning and early afternoon examining the inside and outside of the Jacaranda Street house behind police tape.
A front window was smashed. The grass and gutter was strewn with stubbies and spirits cans.
Forensic police bagged many items for further scrutiny and took pictures.
A house in nearby Waratah Crescent was also examined.
Insp Moodie said a man, 18, had been arrested on Waratah Crescent about 1.25am. He was holding a kitchen knife when arrested and is believed to have smashed the bottles over another man’s head.
He was denied bail on charges of affray, being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He will face Albury Court today.
Insp Moodie said he was concerned about violence in a residential street in Albury.
“We have a number of detectives working on this matter and we will continue to prosecute people who want to flout the law,” he said.
Police are appealing for witnesses, and anyone with information is asked to phone (02) 6023 9271.
