But his inattention last year when turning into the underground car park resulted in a woman suffering serious injuries after she was hit by his car.
The circumstances leading to the woman having surgery with plates and screws inserted into her right shoulder to repair a fracture were outlined in Albury Local Court yesterday.
The woman was walking on a zebra crossing which stretches the length of the car park when she was hit.
He had his right blinker on and was turning to head down a ramp.
Ferguson, 51, of Broad Street, appeared for sentencing on charges of negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm and failing to give way to a pedestrian on a crossing.
Solicitor Allison Bruce said Ferguson simply did not see the woman.
“I understand that accidents happen,” magistrate Margaret Quinn told Ferguson.
“You certainly weren’t paying attention on this day. I take into account you have not done anything like this in the past.”
Ferguson was convicted, fined $600, put on an 18-month bond and disqualified from driving for a period of 18 months.
The court was told in police facts the incident happened about 10.30am on April 10.
Ferguson drove his Commodore into the Myer car park and it was wet with light rain, but visibility was good.
The traffic was heavy in the car park.
The woman was walking alongside her granddaughter, with her husband walking in front of her.
Ferguson hit her with the left side of his vehicle as she was halfway over the crossing.
The impact lifted the woman in the air and pushed her down the ramp about one metre.
She landed on her right shoulder and was taken to the Albury hospital for surgery.
Since the operation she has been treated by an othopaedic surgeon who said she had limited movement with her shoulder and reduced extension with her elbow.
“I didn’t see the woman on the crossing as I was concentrating on turning and only realised I hit her when I felt the bump,” Ferguson told police.
