The plain speaking, independent federal senator is quick to point out he has a manufacturing background himself — he is a blacksmith by trade — rather than a previous career as a lawyer like many of his parliamentary colleagues.
Now Senator Madigan will host an industry day, the sixth of its kind in Australia, on the Border at Wodonga TAFE at the end of May.
His Australian manufacturing and farming program aims to bring people together in industry, schools, tradespeople and TAFE colleges to build networks and promote the region’s industry.
Senator Madigan wants communities, particularly those in regional and rural areas, to understand the opportunities to promote manufacturing, innovation and jobs for young people.
He says Australia can match it with the best in the world when it comes to technology and trades that make products for customers both at home and abroad.
Senator Madigan’s other message for all of us is to check the labels on products we buy and as often as possible, ensure we buy Australian made.
He says we can’t afford not to buy the home-grown option.
