A person at the home had been cooking chips on a stovetop at the Vine Street house on Saturday night.
A fire broke out about 5.50pm and spread into an air conditioning duct and began to engulf the property.
Albury police Inspector Scott Russell said a man, who had been at home with his wife, their five children and the children’s grandparents, was alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm.
“He saw what was occurring and evacuated his family,” Inspector Russell said.
“No-one suffered any serious injuries, but the home and contents were totally lost in the fire.”
According to NSW Fire and Rescue, two children and one adult were taken to hospital suffering from shock.
The family were being supported by the Holbrook community and had access to a motel for the night as the house was uninhabitable, Inspector Russell said.
“Police will investigate the matter,” he said.
“But at this early stage of the investigation it’s being treated as an accident.
“It’s not being treated as anything other than a pure accident.”
Fire and Rescue attended the blaze and were supported by the NSW Rural Fire Service.
According to Fire and Rescue, all NSW homes must have at least one working smoke alarm on each level, with residents urged to check the devices every month.
