Coach Regan Alexander said the experience of the 12 returning players would be key to their tilt at the flag in 2015.
“It’s fantastic to have a few familiar faces back,” Alexander said.
“We rely pretty heavily on local players, we don’t want to be a club that bases its fortunes on bringing in players from other clubs, so having a dozen guys say they’re coming back after spending some time away is good news for us.”
Alexander will have Mt Beauty’s Jason Gentile on hand as an assistant coach for the year, with the quartet of Scott Charwell, Daniel Sgambelloni and Jake and Dylan Mounsey all returning after stints with the Oakleigh Districts in Melbourne’s Southern Football League.
While Alexander is thrilled about the wealth of experience he’s welcomed back into the fold, he knows the Mountain Men have plenty of work to do if they want to establish themselves as genuine premiership contenders.
“We made a lot of improvements last year, but we still struggled against the top sides in the competition,” he said.
“We know Glenrowan, Milawa and Tarrawingee are still the ones to beat, and we were a bit off the pace compared to them last season.
“That said, we’ve had a strong pre-season, and we’re ready to give it a really good crack.”
