The event, which is an initiative of the Albury-Holbrook Polocrosse Club, began in 2005 and is still going strong, according to co-ordinator Sara Grills.
“We had 206 children compete a few years back but this year’s turnout of 190 is second only to that figure,” she said.
“We have had some very positive feedback, not just from the polocrosse community but also from those who participate in other equine sports.”
The event began on Tuesday with junior classic coaching, which continued until Thursday afternoon.
Rymills Coonawarra hosted a Silver Stirrup cocktail part on Thursday to celebrate women in sport and raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Competition resumed yesterday with the start of the Junior Classic, World Cup Squad (seniors) games and the Bank of Queensland Silver Stirrup competition, which is solely for elite female polocrosse players.
Those competitions continue today, with the club competition also resuming.
But the highlight of the show will take place tonight, under lights, with the Australian World Cup squad set to take on an Australian squad team and the final of the Silver Stirrup Ladies Open, with $8000 worth of silver jewellery up for grabs for the competition.
Ms Grills said this year’s junior classic had an international flavour.
“Junior teams consist of four boys and four girls,” she said.
“This year we have a team from New Zealand and also a ‘Barbarians team’ with Australian kids joining up with two from Britain and two from the US.”
The event will conclude tomorrow with the holding of the Junior Classic Finals Day and the conclusion of the club competition.
