So much so that a prevention workshop will be held tonight.
Presenters of the SafeTALK workshop, Debbi Forrest and Cath Norris, said locals were keen to find out how they could help those left behind.
“People want to know more how to prevent suicide,” Mrs Forrest said.
The three-hour workshop will raise awareness of how suicide affects the community, encourage participants to talk openly and honestly about such a closed subject and set out what to do if they see warning signs in others or think about it themselves.
Ms Norris said rural communities were highly vulnerable, particularly at times of drought, flood and plague, but rarely had adequate support to fight the scourge.
She said it was so important that people were informed and could talk about suicide.
“If you have people in your community who know how to respond and help, that’s getting rid of one of those barriers,” she said. “It can encourage people to seek support.”
The free workshop will be held at Walbundrie Sports Ground tonight at 6pm. To attend, call Debbi at Intereach on (02) 6051 7800.
