Wodonga Police received a call to Wornes Drive about 1.20pm.
The Special Operations Group was called from Melbourne to remove and de-activate the device.
Police could not say where it was detonated, but said there were loud explosions about 5.10pm.
A man was last night helping police with their inquiries.
Early investigations have led police to believe it is not related to any terror threat.
Police said they were still investigating the matter but assured the community there was no reason for concern.
