Big changes will mean the resort almost halves its energy bill — the bonus for being more environmentally friendly.
The project has been so successful, the resort has been nominated for two Clubs NSW awards in the environment and sustainability category.
General manager Chris Rebecchi said the club’s three goals were long-term viability, a reduced carbon footprint and to be a good community citizen.
The club has installed a 100-kilowatt solar panel system that doubles as a car park shade structure.
“It’s unique in that most solar panels are on roofs. We’ve used ours to provide shade for customers,” Mr Rebecchi said. “And we plan to use the area for community markets.”
Other changes involve LED lighting, a power optimisation system that reduces voltage used, and the introduction of electric car charging units.
Overall, the project will slash a $220,000 annual bill to about $120,000.
“It’s creating financial viability,” he said.
“The club is a pretty important asset for Howlong and making it sustainable provides the opportunity to be here for the long term.”
The resort will hold an information session tomorrow from 8.30am to 11.30am on its plans.
Independent experts will be at the free session, run by NSW Office for Environment and Heritage. Phone 0477 716 757 for information.
