Rhy Toole, 9, found the small bronze badge near the RSL car park on Reid Street.
He said he had finished marching with his school, St Augustine’s, when his friend spotted the badge in the gutter.
“I’m going to go to the police station with mum to hand it in,” he said.
Rhy’s mum Simone Walsh looked up the medal and said it appeared to be from World War I.
It is an AIF Returned From Active Service Badge, stamped with the number 140713.
The badge is a little battered and was made by Stokes & Sons Melbourne.
Ms Walsh has contacted the police and Wod- onga RSL about the item.
“I don’t know if they are rare or whatnot but it is very important to get them back,” she said.
“Someone who has lost it might not even have the first clue of where to look for it.”
The person who is missing the badge can contact Wodonga Police on (02) 6049 2600.
