The man had been driving behind a Holden that turned right from Anzac Parade onto the Kiewa Valley Highway at 5.50pm.
The victim told police the other driver stopped his car on the highway before getting out and walking back toward him.
The angered driver yelled at the victim and is believed to have said “What are you doing? I’ve got a baby on board.”
Leading Senior Constable Andrew Naldrett, of Wodonga police, said it appeared the driver had an issue with how close the victim was travelling behind him.
The men exchanged words and the offender then punched the victim through the car window before getting back into his vehicle.
Traffic began to bank up during the incident which ended with the offender driving off toward Kiewa.
The victim said the car was either white or silver and described the man as being in his mid-twenties and about 167 centimetres tall.
He had a close-cut beard and was wearing a golf hat.
Police are trying to identify the car, its registration and the driver.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Wodonga police.
