A recent survey by the Salvos has revealed that a seemingly ever-growing number of people are living in the bleak reality of entrenched and persistent poverty.
The survey of 2406 people who visited the 262 Salvation Army centres across Australia revealed that 25 per cent went without at least one substantial meal a day.
It found that high cost of accommodation was leaving some of their clients to live on less than $18 a day.
The situation becomes worse in winter when those already struggling have to factor in the costs of heating, or finding some way to keep warm.
That leaves some with the unacceptable choice — keep warm or go without sufficient food.
When it gets to that point, the Salvation Army is often the only answer.
For those of us who can afford it, a donation to support the Salvos means you are playing a part in helping them assist some of our most needy.
