Two young fishermen discovered the body and contacted police soon after 1pm.
Dartmouth Hotel publican Aaron Scales was on duty when a young man entered the hotel and asked to use the phone to call police.
“He was pretty shaken up,” Mr Scales said.
“He didn’t say too much, but said the person was wearing a safety jacket.”
Wodonga Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer, as well as Bethanga police, Fisheries Victoria and SES attended the scene.
Rescue boats were used to retrieve the body just after 2pm.
Police have contacted the family of the Camberwell man, but have not released his name.
Detective Sergeant Simpfendorfer said the man’s canoe was found at the boat ramp off Horsefall Road.
He said it was unclear how long the body had been floating in the water, but police were not treating the incident as suspicious.
Meanwhile, police attended a second incident at the lake on Sunday where a fisherman was treated for hypothermia.
Bethanga Leading Senior Constable Nev Barrow said rain had caused the man’s boat to fill with water and tipped him over.
Police have asked those using waterways to be vigilant, always wear a life jacket and inform family or friends where they plan to be and when they return home.
A report is being prepared for the coroner
