Heading into the first round, Fraser said long putting would be crucial for any players wanting to finish sub-par.
However, his 35 strokes on the greens failed to help him as he limped home to finish +2, nine shots back from leader American Dustin Johnson on -7.
The 36-year-old Aussie started badly with a bogey on the first hole before dropping a further shot on the fourth.
Fraser then hit his stride and dropped in three birdies on the trot to put his name in red figures for the first.
It was to be shot-lived as another bogey on the par-three eighth hole as he made the turn Even.
While he was much more consistent on the trip home, Fraser was unable to pick up any shots as he entered the clubhouse at +2.
Fraser will have plenty of well-wishers again when he tees off at 8pm Australian Eastern Standard Time.
One of the Border's other great sporting products Sam Groth took to twitter before Fraser's first round to wish him luck .
