The blaze started in a box on the nature strip of a home in McFarland Road in Wodonga about 9.55am.
Firefighters tried to extinguish the fire using dry powder, but plastic continued to burn as sparks leapt from the box.
Firefighter Mick Lavery said the CFA had had to wait for Ausnet to isolate power before the fire could be extinguished due to safety reasons.
“It knocked out power to all the houses in the immediate area,” he said.
“We went into the ones that weren’t knocked out and made sure their power was off just to be safe.”
The fire burnt in a shallow underground area for about 30 minutes, disrupting the electricity supply to homes.
The blaze did not pose any risk to houses or nearby residents.
Firefighters blocked the street with fire trucks for about 30 minutes during the incident.
