Albury fire station commander Dean Campbell said the fires were also more serious and could lead to significant injuries and even death.
Mr Campbell is launching Operation Cold Snap to ensure Border residents are vigilant while keeping warm in their homes.
“Already this year nine people have died because of a fire in their home in NSW and we don’t want to see that number increase,” he said.
“A lot of people seem to adopt the ‘it won’t happen to me’ attitude — the fact is it can.”
Mr Campbell said people should keep looking when cooking, turn off heaters and electric blankets before leaving home or getting into bed, keep everything a metre away from the heater, clean lint filters on clothes dryers, not overload power points and boards, keep candles away from curtains and never smoke in bed.
