Their state president argues the party wants to run its own race and has good recognition across the electorate.
Nevertheless, there is a good geographical and fraternal argument for the Nationals acting sooner than later.
Any candidate needs to be known across a wide expanse with Indi stretching from the edge of Melbourne to Corryong.
It is a tough job and plenty of time is needed for name recognition.
The Nationals candidate will also need to differentiate personally from the Liberal contender Sophie Mirabella as there's little policy room between the Coalition partners.
There is also the 'optics' of the matter, with the Nationals looking serious about the seat by naming someone early in the campaign.
