Lucy Nagle and Odin Cooper were chosen for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle on Thursday, July 30.
The Association of NSW Regional Conservatoriums teamed up with the Australian World Orchestra to give 19 young musicians from regional areas the rare chance to perform at the Sydney Opera House.
Albury High School student Lucy Nagle, 16, has been learning the violin for eight years at the Murray Conservatorium under Cheryl Lewis and Damien Jones.
Lucy, who is now a Grade 5 level musician, wanted to play the violin for as long as she could remember.
“There is so much variety with the violin,” Lucy said.
“I love playing classical music on it and I love finding sheet music to play the latest pop music on it too.”
Lucy said she looked forward to participating in the Australian World Orchestra Project.
“We’ll be playing with people from all over NSW and to a very high standard,” she said.
“Obviously performing at the Sydney Opera House will be a highlight.”
Albury’s Odin Cooper, 9, a Trinity Anglican College student, started playing the violin 18 months ago.
He said the violin had appealed to him and his eldest brother Charlie, 14, also had learnt the instrument.
“I liked the sound of it and I liked the shape of it too,” Odin said, who also plays the snare drum.
The Australian World Orchestra under the direction of Sir Simon will perform in Sydney and Melbourne this month. These performances will include works by Debussy and Bruckner.
In partnership with the Australian World Orchestra, the Association of NSW Regional Conservatoriums organised the two-day Regional Conservatorium Special Project in Sydney to coincide with the visit of the Australian World Orchestra.
The project starts on Wednesday, July 29, and finishes on Thursday, July 30, with workshops held at the Sydney Opera House.
Students will rehearse alongside members of the Australian Youth Orchestra under the tutelage of the Australian World Orchestra.
The project will culminate with Regional Conservatorium students performing on the Sydney Opera House Concert platform with the Australian World Orchestra and the Australian Youth Orchestra on Thursday, July 30, under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle.
In addition to the Sydney workshops, students prepared the selected repertoire and participated in video-conferencing with members of the Australian World Orchestra.
To be eligible for the project, students had to learn violin at a NSW Regional Conservatorium.
Places were available for students of different skill levels from beginner (open strings) to 8th Grade AMEB level.
