The supermarket giant remains tight-lipped about the changes, but it is believed butchers at at least one local store have been told they will lose their jobs.
The Australasian Meat Industry Employees Union has raised concerns about the number of jobs that will be cut and where the positions will come from.
A spokesman said on Friday that the company had been in talks with the union about the jobs as the company moves towards pre-packaged meat cut offsite.
Woolworths shares have dropped in the past year.
A company spokesman said the business was working with affected staff.
“Woolworths announced earlier this year that we would be changing our butcheries in Victoria to better serve our customers, with more of our meat team available to assist our customers,” he said.
“Woolworths will employ an additional 2000 new team members across Victoria in the next three years, and we are working with affected meat department team members to ensure they are aware of their options.”
