A report for Albury Council's Monday night meeting recommends $10,000 be given to Albury Wodonga Regional FoodShare which is fighting for survival.
Wodonga Council confirmed earlier this month it would give $10,000 and FoodShare founding director and chairwoman Deanne Drage is keen for Albury to do likewise.
"All councils have an important responsibility to support the most disadvantaged people in our community and Albury Wodonga Regional FoodShare is working really hard and is keen to engage councillors not just financially, but strategically," Ms Drage said.
"We do need financial support or else we'll have to close the doors."
FoodShare launched a campaign in June to raise $250,000 to ensure it continued operating and $90,000 has been contributed so far.
Ms Drage said a minimum of $135,000 was needed by the end of the year to maintain the service.
Corowa, Alpine, Greater Hume, Towong and Wangaratta councils have also been called on to contribute.
Albury Council's community and recreation director James Jenkins, in his report for Monday's meeting, stresses the role of the city in supporting services.
"It is important that all parts of our community as well as local, state and federal governments play their part to ensure that our community is healthy vibrant and sustainable in the long term," Mr Jenkins writes.
“Council can play its part with a one off donation to assist in stabilising the organisation as well as providing a charitable donation through Glenecho and Mirambeena Community Centres as the most visible way of linking ongoing support for the food relief service.”
Mr Jenkins also noted the council could provide support via grant opportunities, through offering access to businesses, helping with events and the promotion of a workplace-giving program.
FoodShare caters to Glenecho Neighbourhood Centre, filling a role previously occupied by Carevan.
