The Pigeons did well to help out their undersized defence, with some strong mid-court pressure playing into and engaging tussle between Annalise Grinter and Magpies shooter Amanda Umanski.
Umanski finished with 30 points, but wasn’t able to find the same amount of opportunities as her counterpart Bridget Cassar (45 goals) with Grinter showing some boldness in defence to separate and cut off a number of offensive thrusts.
Yarrawonga coach Sarah Wollington was pleased with the performance, after being pushed by the speedy Wangaratta mid-court earlier in the year.
“Wangaratta are a good side, but once we got that five point break we were able to play it on our terms a bit more,” she said.
“They came back at us in the second quarter, but I thought we did well to hold firm and get the win.”
