Leader City is just one point above second-placed Boomers, but it’s now five points above the fourth-placed Greens.
Striker Tayla Page was on fire in the Jelbart Park derby, netting a brace for the winners.
Albury City coach Steve Kusic singled out youngster Emily Williams for praise, after she kept the dangerous Alicia Torcaso to just one goal.
“It was a pretty important game for us,” Kusic said.
“We needed to consolidate our spot on top of the ladder and United we felt were a team that was really threatening.
“We had to beat them to win the title.
“Of course we haven’t won it it, but it’s a good start to get over the top of them.
“They’ve been playing good football the past month and they were the ones threatening the most.”
Boomers kept the pressure on City with a 4-1 win over Myrtleford, while Melrose and Wangaratta had comfortable victories.
With scores locked 1-1 at the break, City was forced to dig deep in the second half against the Greens.
While he was pleased with the win, Kusic knows there’s plenty more to play out in the title race.
In a great finish to the season, several clubs could claim top honours.
“It will come down to the last game I reckon because all the big four clubs are playing each other,” Kusic said.
“That will tell who’s going to win the league and sort out the top four as well.”
