Shock as stag slain
A PET deer, who would let children ride on his back, has had his head and antlers hacked off by trophy hunters.
Owners Manfred and Narelle Wagner were shocked to find their beloved red deer Karl lying headless on their Myrtleford district property on Saturday afternoon.
“I’m upset and gutted – it’s like shooting your prized bull or horse,” Mr Wagner said.
Helmet plays crucial role for injured Wodonga cyclist
A WODONGA cyclist has avoided a severe head injury thanks to wearing a helmet.
Police said the man, 52, could have been more gravely hurt if he had not been protected when he struck the side of a school bus in Melbourne Road, Wodonga, on Tuesday morning.
Sgt Andrew Wilson said it was an endorsement for donning helmets.
Too late for Nats’ name change
THE National Party's decision to attempt a tweak to its name has been labelled a desperate measure by some of its political rivals.
The Coalition partner has applied to the Victorian Electoral Commission to change the formal registered party name to National Country Party Victoria after dumping "country" from its name in the early 1980s in a bid to win more metropolitan seats.
It comes in the wake of the Nationals’ poor performance at last year's state election which included the shock loss in Shepparton to an independent.
He's your loss GWS: Sheedy
FORMER Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy says he’s not surprised Giants reject Anthony Miles is starring at another club.
Sheedy coached Miles at GWS, before the club let him go to Richmond where the Howlong midfielder has made the most of his second chance.
Triple Richmond premiership player Sheedy says he’s enjoyed watching Miles play at his former club, but refused to say the Giants had made a mistake by delisting him in 2013.
