During the centenary year of the Anzac landing in Gallipoli, Victorian Opera and community choirs around the state will present Remembrance, a moving work in story, song and image.
Written and directed by acclaimed Australian author Rodney Hall, Remembrance spans six chapters – enlistment, embarkation, training, landing, trench warfare and homecoming.
Victorian Opera’s artistic director and composer Richard Mills has specially arranged songs of the wartime era alongside Hall’s poetry and prose.
“Songs and poetry combine to share a moment in our country’s history; a moment that demonstrates our nation’s courage, loyalty and identity,” Mr Mills said.
“It’s based on popular songs of the time, linked with archival film and score of the time.”
As a war correspondent, Kanen Breen will join eight of Victorian Opera’s talented young artists as they create a series of moving musical portraits against the backdrop of archival footage, accompanied by a chamber orchestra and community choirs.
These young artists are students of the Master of Music (Opera Performance), a collaboration between Victorian and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, The University of Melbourne, including Kate Amos, Carlos E. Barcenas, Nathan Lay, Elizabeth Lewis, Emma Muir-Smith, Michael Petruccelli, Cristina Russo and Matthew Tng.
It is presented with assistance from the National Library of Australia and the Australian War Memorial.
It has been made possible through the Helen Macpherson Smith philanthropic trust.
Remembrance will be performed at The Cube Wodonga on Monday, August 31, at 10.30am and 7.30pm.
