A woman, 30, was driving three children under seven from Yarrawonga towards Rutherglen about 1am.
Police have said she lost concentration on the Murray Valley Highway at Brimin.
The car flipped on its side in a drainage channel.
Rutherglen Sergeant Mick Savage said there were no injuries but it could have been a different story if passengers were not wearing their seatbelts.
“Seatbelts save lives clearly and it could have been a lot more serious,” he said.
After rescuing the woman and children from the car, police went back to the vehicle to recover the children’s blankets.
The woman was issued a penalty notice.
“If you’re feeling tired, stop,” Sergeant Savage said.
