He worked full-time and drank on the weekends, but at age 42 he realised there was no “magic health wand”.
Mr Wilmot, from Perth, stopped on the Border on Tuesday clocking just over two thirds of his journey to Brisbane.
He is trekking 5400km with two British back packers and a camper van to raise money for the Heart Foundation.
He said he first started training for a marathon with a walk around the block, but wanted to do something bigger.
“I thought I was a couple years off a heart attack, I made this decision and no one could stop me, I felt alive and excited,” Mr Wilmot said.
He has raised $6000, to donate search Hearts Across Australia on Facebook.
