Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews on Friday officially opened Beechworth's lake Sambell and Kerferd for trout cod fishing.
The move followed a campaign by recreational anglers and the stocking of trout cod in the lakes since 2008.
Tackle retailer Wayne Dubois, known as Mr Freshwater, came from Batlow for the announcement.
"Becoming the first one in the country means that you will have people travelling from a million miles away,” Mr Dubois said.
"Murray cod has an aura about it, but trout cod has an even bigger aura – it's like its mystical cousin.
"In freshwater fishing in the country it would be the most sought-after fish."
VRFish general manager Dallas D'Silva, who represents recreational fishers, said he knew of anglers from Queensland and South Australia planning to chase trout cod in Beechworth.
Trout cod is a protected species in other areas.
