The accident occurred at 8am slowing down morning commuters in the north bound lane just past the Borella Road on-ramp.
Deep tyre marks could be seen entrenched in the median strip where the truck tore through the metal wire fencing.
Initial reports from firefighters indicated the truck had swerved to miss another vehicle.
However a nearby motorist, who witnessed the incident, said the driver had simply lost control of the truck.
The woman did not wished to be named but described it as a “scary” accident which left her shaken.
“I was behind him and went to overtake him and he started coming across into my lane,” she said.
“I started honking and he still kept coming across.
“I backed off and he just narrowly missed me and came all the way across the road into the median strip.”
The driver managed to get passed the truck while it was on the median strip and pulled over further up the road.
She said the truck crossed back to the the left hand lane then pulled over.
“I called the police to tell them what happened,” she said.
“I was pretty shaken.
“I actually asked him what happened and he said he lost control.
“He did a good job in regaining control - for what ever reason he lost control and he did a good job not to lose the truck completely.”
According to firefighters fuel had spilled over onto the south-bound lanes and was covered with dirt during the clean-up.
The truck was inspected by police and firefighters.
