As a junior coach with Wodonga Diamonds Football Club during 2014 and with Murray United Football Club in 2015, Matt has scored goals for his volunteer work on the pitch and in the community too.
His role with the Wodonga Diamonds also gained him early entry to La Trobe University Albury-Wodonga Campus in 2014 through its Aspire program, which recognises the value of volunteers on the Border.
Matt, who lives at Yackandandah, started studying his Bachelor of Science degree in Wodonga this year.
The former Catholic College Wodonga student said the course had more than measured up to his expectations.
“The course is really fun and the transition from high school was made really easy,” he said.
Matt said he was motivated to pursue science after he did badly on a year 10 chemistry exam.
“It became a challenge to me; now it’s my best subject and I love it,” he said.
Matt brings this same philosophy to his love of soccer, which he has played for the past 11 years.
Matt plays for the under-18s and coaches the juniors twice a week.
The coaching was an extension of his love for the game, leading the under-11s at Diamonds Football Club and the under-10s at Murray United.
“I thought coaching young kids would be excellent fun; I just jumped in and I loved it,” he said.
“There’s a lot of joy from seeing them learning and their development.”
The Community Volunteer Expo will be held as part of the La Trobe University Albury-Wodonga Campus open day festival in Wodonga on Friday.
People can learn how to make a difference in their community, gain valuable skills and network with organisations in the university courtyard outside 3a1 and 3 Degrees Cafe.
Expo participants include Albury-Wodonga Volunteer Resource Centre, Country Fire Authority, Green Army, Australian Youth Climate Coalition, Community Door, La Trobe Volunteer Opportunities, Junction Support Services and Interchange.
There will be free food, music and entertainment during the open day between 4pm and 7pm.
The closing date for the Aspire early entry applications to La Trobe University Albury-Wodonga is Monday, August 31.
Students and staff will be available to give applicants feedback and help at the open day.
