This month it’s possible to tap into local knowledge when Beechworth Urban Landcare and Sustainability (BULS) and the Beechworth community present Sustainable House Day 2015 on Sunday, September 13.
The event will cover worm-based waste management systems, growing fruit and vegetables in the North East, using geese to mow lawns, alternative building methods and materials and new directions in wind power and solar lighting.
Sustainable House Day, which runs from 10am until 4pm, features three properties at Beechworth, all located off Fighting Gully Road within four kilometres of each other.
Rustic Retreat, 13 Andrew Court, Beechworth, is a strawbale home embracing many environmentally sustainable design elements.
Vision Splendid Eco Retreat, 69 Ryan Lane, Beechworth, is environmentally-sensitive holiday accommodation on the fringe of town.
Finally, Survive and Thrive, 302 Fighting Gully Road, Beechworth, presents sustainable and closed looped living.
On the same day the North East Rural Living Fair will be held at the Wooragee Hall, Beechworth-Wodonga road, Wooragee, between 10am and 2pm.
The free community event will offer a family-friendly program with presentations, workshops and stalls based on the homemade, sustainable and environmental-friendly themes.
Among the presentations are nest boxes, an introduction to beekeeping, planning your garden for climate change and dung beetles and biocontrol.
Workshops include food preserving, homecrafts and fire-ready planning for the bushfire season.
Among other features of the fair will be soil testing and a range of children’s activities.
Morning tea and lunch will be available at the hall to buy on the day.
