Magistrate Tony Murray warned Oliver Glen Mohr that even if he pleaded guilty, he was looking at a minimum of seven years’ jail.
“They are the most serious matters,” Mr Murray said in Albury Local Court on Friday.
“The only thing leaving this short of a charge of murder is that the lady survived.”
The victim, 44, had to be flown to The Royal Melbourne Hospital on Wednesday night with multiple fractures of her eye sockets, cheek bones and a suspected neck fracture.
Mohr, a self-employed graphic artist and father-of-three, is charged with cause grievous bodily harm to a person with intent to cause serious injury and detain person occasioning actual bodily harm.
Defence solicitor James Sloan said he did not want to deny the seriousness of the allegations, but it did appeared to be “a one-off situation”.
“There seems to be something behind it that we don’t know about,” he said.
In applying for bail, Mr Sloan said the Lavington man, 41, had strong community ties.
Mr Sloan said Mohr’s father had indicated he could provide a bail surety of about $5000.

But Mr Murray refused bail, pointing to the “very strong” prosecution case and the fact Mohr made admissions to police.
Mr Murray highlighted a photograph tendered by police as stark proof of the serious injuries the woman suffered.
It showed her face as heavily swollen and bruised, with a brace around her neck.
Mohr allegedly punched her with both fists and kicked her as she lay on the floor.
Prosecutor Sergeant Shannon Lewis said police strongly opposed bail as Mohr carried out a prolonged assault.
The victim was at a friend’s house in Klose Street on Wednesday about 7pm, socialising with her and Mohr.
It is alleged that Mohr attacked the woman between 9.15pm and 10.15pm before he then locked her in the bathroom.
Mohr was remanded in custody to appear in Albury Local Court on October 19.
