Wagga man Brad Fewson has been suffering from traumatic brain injury as a result of his time in the military.
He sustained blast force trauma from improvised explosive devices and other incidents during his deployments in East Timor and Iraq.
A funding campaign for was launched in June for Mr Fewston in a bid to get him to the Carrick Institute in America.
His wife, Laura, said Australia has no centres of the kind to provide the rehabilitation he needs.
“Unfortunately due to the exchange rate what was meant to be $1500 a day is turning into $2000 a day, and that is just for treatment,” Mrs Fewston said.
“We are hoping for better quality of life and hopefully stall the process and give him a few more better years.
“It can be quite frustrating and discouraging at times when you don’t get anywhere and because he hasn’t been able to work the financial side has been difficult.”
Brad also wants to raise awareness of traumatic brain injury so other soldiers and veterans don’t have to go through what his family has been through.
Marilyn Dobe and her partner, Jay, who is Mr Fewston's brother, are organising a CrossFit fundraiser in North Albury.
Members from CrossFit Albury Wodonga and CrossFit Touch n Go Albury will face off in the ultimate fitness battle.
Teams of four, consisting of two men and two women, will participate in three workouts during the day.
People with CrossFit experience are invited to enter for $25 and supporters are welcome for a gold coin donation.
Apart from covering the day's costs, all proceeds will go directly to the Fewstons.
Miss Dobe said the fundraiser means a lot to the family.
“CrossFit is the closest thing Brad has ever described as being similar to a military scenario,” she said.
“It was something he was so passionate about.
“We want the Border to help because he was deployed into combat and now he is suffering - he did that for people in Australia so we need to help him in return.”
The event will kick-off on Saturday at 7:00am.
