That is the size of a tender Greater Hume Council will consider at a meeting on Wednesday.
It had been estimated that at least $1.4 million needed to be spent on modernising the Henty pool and $1.2 million for the Holbrook pool.
But in a report to be considered by the council, one of four contractors it contacted for quotes came up with a price for the Henty pool of $693,360.
This was from the company Total Creations and was well below two other quotes.
Icon Building Group had quoted $1,950,650 for the job and Swimplex $1,308,810.
Because of the significantly higher price from Icon, the council decided it was best to further evaluate the tenders from Total Creations, of Griffith, and Swimplex.
That involved Greater Hume staff visiting three other councils that had recently done pool works.
“Temora and Cootamundra councils had had new pools installed by Total Creations and both councils are satisfied with the quality and backup support,” waste and facilities manager Andrew Shaw said in a report.
If the council goes ahead with the recommendation to accept the price from Total Creations, the project is likely to start at the end of the 2015-16 swimming season.
The council decided in July to also make a bid for $1million in the second round of the National Stronger Regions fund for the refurbishment of the Henty and Holbrook pools.
It also committed at the time to providing a matching amount, but had hoped on savings being achieved if the two upgrades could be carried out simultaneously.
Mr Shaw said in his report that the council engaged an independent company, Melbourne Pool and Spa, to produce a preliminary cost estimate for the Henty pool upgrade.
That came in at $811,000.
Mr Shaw said Total Creations had indicated it was open to negotiation on the brands and type of hardware for the project “in order to deliver longer-term savings”.
The council will also consider on Wednesday the tendering of leaseholds for the Jindera and Walla pools for three swimming seasons.
